This video shows excerpts from a dance piece called “The Before” choreographed by Garth Fagan. Dancers are from the Garth Fagan Modern Dance Company music is “The Path” by Ralph McDonald.
Garth Fagan first caught our attention as the choreographer for the Broadway version of the Lion King. He continues to use the African dance motifs in “The Before”.
In “the Before” Fagan has created some fabulous dance motifs by eliminating all external elements from his native Caribbean and African dance origins and combined them with contemporary movement. They are wonderful, rich in rhythmic variety, qualities and beautiful patterns in solo, duet and ensemble combinations.
I like Fagan’s transitions from one movement thought to the next and how he combines the motifs that are punctuated with dynamic pauses of stillness.
The movement is a wonderful blend and brings out some different and unusual movement combinations.
It is captivating and refreshing to watch.
I hope you enjoy this to and please share with your friends!
