The clips in this video are from the explosive piece called “Political Mother” choreographed by the most popular choreographer in the UK at the moment, Hofesh Shechter. He is Israeli born and now working in London England. His background as a dancer includes experience with the Batshiva Dance Company in Isreal.
Hofesh Shechter is a dancer/chorographer and a musician /composer. He composed the score as a rock fusion and the choreography unique to his style was influenced by combining Israeli folk dance with contemporary dance movement. He makes a very powerful and political statement regarding the underlying need of human beings to follow authority.
This piece is choreographed for 10 dancers and 8 musicians performing on stage all together.
This is a spectacle I would love to have the opportunity to see. I really like the grounded earthy movement. The weight of the dancers is really dropped into the ground and feels almost untrained and “natural” even though they are brilliant performers.
I feel like the dancing is bare bones and stripped of extraneous material that makes it punchy, striking, and very intense. It is timeless and the muted colors of the costumes emphasize the universality of the theme.
The music is driving, powerful and sounds crazy at times and having the musicians part of the piece makes me feel like there is an over whelming military like force that holds the dancers and renders them powerless to this overriding external power.
Bold, provocative, riveting and exciting I would describe this piece. An experience!
