This video is a stunning piece danced by six women from the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. It is called “Vespers” and was choreographed by the renowned American Choreographer, Ulysses Dove. The music is by Mikel Rouse.
Ulysses Doves’ source of inspiration for this piece was from his childhood when he accompanied his Great Grandmother and Grandmother to their Baptist Sunday services. There he witnessed their fervent and powerful spiritual faith. As he grew up he observed the stark and challenging lives of these and other women and how their spiritual faith and practice was their core strength and power as women. He also witnessed the profound bonds they shared as they supported each other through their lives.
This piece is a reflection of this profound experience. It is stark almost harsh in its presentation and disciplined religious fervor and spiritual practice. Focused, powerful, direct and intense this personal spiritual experience and source of solace and strength, is shared between women walking the same historical path
The color theme is shades of browns, from the costumes, the floor, walls and even the wooden chairs which are lit by shafts of light that illuminate the scence creating the Sacred Space. The sacred light gradually brightens illuminating the space and spiritual ecstasy and bliss of the women. The effect against the stark background is stunning.
The choreography is brilliant, powerful and dynamic. The dancers are also brilliant, powerful and beautiful. The piece is riveting.
This is a must see. Although this was choreographed in 1986, it is still as relevant and powerful today and remains in the Ailey repertoire. A great tribute to a great choreographer.
