Itzik Galili: Mona Lisa – Alicia Amatriain & Jason Reilly

Daring athleticism defines this duet called, Mona Lisa, choreographed by the Israeli choreographer, Itzik Galili. It is danced here by Alicia Amatriain and Jason Reilly, members of the Stuttgart Ballet in Germany.

The music was composed in collaboration by Thomas Hofs and Itzik Galili. The music is harsh and industrial made with typewriter sounds that were used symbolically for its use as a tool of communication to underlie the connetction between the couple.

The lighting is also very industrial, especially in the beginning when Reilly dances his solo. The lights begin by lying on the ground and are then raised in a cloud of black ice creating the most stunning effect. Reilly disappears and appears as he dances in and out of the stark white light and shadow created by the lighting. At times he dances in silhouette against the swirling white “cloud” which looks amazing.

This Mona Lisa duet is basically a communication between a couple that is demonstrated through a spin on a “push me/pull me” relationship. The dynamic between them appears loose and lanky with moments of teasing and posturing, almost sparring. However, in spite of the apparent easy going appearance, this is a very demanding piece, which I think is emphasized by the cold industrial accents and sound.

Itzik has certainly taken advantage of the superb dancers by showcasing their technical prowess in this riveting and physically athletic duet. The choreography smacks of daring risk, fierce attack and dynamic energy that, at times, borders on the edge of a technical gymnastic display. Amatrianai’s combined strength and flexibility of her extensions and split moves and the daring spinning lifts are in themselves awe inspiring!

This duet is certainly an impressive piece of technical virtuosity. However, I have read several reviews where people have commented on the music/sound used for the piece. People commented on finding the music irritating to out right distracting. In your opinion did you find the music enhances the piece or did you find it distracting? I would love to hear your opinion!

Be sure to check out this dynamic duo…. And pass it on!
