Tyrell Rolle Takedemi

Clever and captivating, this performance by Tyrell Rolle of the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre, dances a solo choreographed by Robert Battle called “Takedemi”. The music features Sheila Chandra.

This piece as a wonderful fusion of South Indian Kamatic rhythms, that have been “deconstructed and abstracted” into contemporary dance language. The movement is driven and shaped by the vocalized rhythmic syllables in the score. The choreography is bold, dynamic and fascinating to watch.

We see Tyrell dance a mix of shapes, powerful jumps with great height and held pauses using all parts of his body with movement that is percussive and quick.

Tyrell is a gorgeous dancer and shows his abundant skill, strong attack and attention to form and line. His movement is crisp and clean and he takes up the space around him with his presence and command and extension of movement.

This is a strong piece, the more I watch it the more I am impressed by it. My favorite part is where the singer breathes in and out and Tyrell forms a beautiful round shape with his arms that are strongly offset by the black background! A lovely moment!

I hope you enjoy the solo too! and SHARE with friends!
